We boarded the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train at 7:30 for an 8AM departure. We were riding in the open-air gondola car, which was breezy and cold but would afford the best views of the Animas River and San Juan Mountains on the 3-hour ride to Silverton, CO.
Within minutes of departing, the views were amazing, within 15 minutes of the ride as we gained elevation, the views were breathtaking.
The train is an authentic coal fired, steam-powered engine train that has been in continuous operation since 1882. Because of the coal burning, we occasionally had to watch out for flying embers.
We arrived in Silverton around noon, had lunch, rode in a horse pulled carriage and boarded the train back to Durango.
Liliana fell asleep on the way back while Jonah inspected the other cars and interviewed the crew.
Jonah and I caught a nice rainbow on the way back.
